Innovation competition: MLL Munich leukemia laboratory once again among the TOP 100

[Press release]

As a technology and industry pioneer, the MLL Munich Leukemia Laboratory once again receives the prestigious award for its innovative strength.

Munich, 01.02.2024 - Freshly awarded for proven innovative strength: The MLL Munich Leukemia Laboratory has once again received the TOP 100 seal, now for the sixth time in 2024. This award is presented annually to particularly innovative medium-sized companies.

On behalf of competition organizer compamedia, innovation researcher Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke from the Vienna University of Economics and Business and his team examined the innovative strength of all participants based on more than 100 criteria from five categories: Innovation-promoting top management, innovation climate, innovative processes and organization, external orientation/open innovation and innovation success. "Are the companies able to create new products, new services, new processes and new business models? And are these achievements just coincidences or the result of a structured and targeted approach? These are the questions we examine at TOP 100," says Prof. Franke, explaining his approach to the review. It is also important how and whether innovations and product improvements have been able to establish themselves on the market.

The MLL Munich Leukemia Laboratory is a leading national and international laboratory for the diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma with a high level of in-house expertise, quality assurance and turnaround time. "Our extremely modern equipment, comprehensive state-of-the-art analysis methods and the use of the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, enable optimal diagnostics and treatment for patients," explains MLL Managing Director Prof. Dr. med. Torsten Haferlach. "We are delighted that the MLL was also able to impress in the scientific selection process of the TOP100 competition in 2024, after we were even awarded first place as Innovator of the Year in our category last year." With over 330 employees, the laboratory currently processes around 125,000 samples a year, more than 1.15 million samples have been sent in by patients since it was founded, more than 2.5 million findings have been produced and over 750 peer-reviewed publications have been authored or co-authored. In MLL and MLL MVZ, over 5,000 patients per year are treated for diagnostics, therapy and consultation in the context of second opinions.

To ensure equal opportunities, the TOP 100 seal is awarded in three size categories: up to 50, 51 to 200 and more than 200 employees. In the 31st edition of the innovation competition, 388 SMEs competed for the award. The official award ceremony will take place on June 28, 2024 at the "congress centrum weimarhalle" as part of the German SME Summit, hosted by science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar, who has been mentoring the TOP 100 innovation competition for twelve years.
