New Approaches in Diagnostics – Research and Innovation at MLL

25. March 2025

MLL is constantly setting new standards in leukemia diagnostics: by closely combining technological development, diagnostic expertise and intensive research, we drive innovation to shape the diagnostics of tomorrow. Our goal is to be at the forefront of science and to provide patients worldwide with the best possible diagnosis of hematological neoplasms.

To further support our ambitions and aspirations in these areas, two new departments were created at MLL in early 2025: "Research" and "Innovation". These teams are dedicated to the development of innovative diagnostic methods and applied hematology research to accelerate the translation of discoveries into practice.

Innovation for more precise diagnostics

Under the leadership of Dr. Wencke Walter, the Innovation Department evaluates the added diagnostic value of new technologies in order to further increase the accuracy and efficiency of leukemia diagnostics through their targeted use. The rapid development of molecular genetics in particular opens up promising opportunities for us to quickly integrate these innovative approaches into everyday diagnostics. However, not every method is equally suitable for every diagnostic problem. It is therefore crucial to integrate new technologies in a targeted manner and tailor them to diagnostic needs.

Overall, the Innovation team aims to find the optimal combination of methods to improve monitoring and treatment strategies, reduce turnaround times, promote environmentally friendly laboratory practices and develop the best diagnostic solutions for patients.

Research for new perspectives

The research team led by Dr. Alessandro Baldi is using the comprehensive diagnostic data available at MLL to gain a better understanding of hematological diseases and uncover new scientific insights. As data analysis and bioinformatics are essential for modern, data-intensive research, the Bioinformatics Department plays a central role. In addition, the Research Department coordinates numerous international scientific collaborations. Results are regularly shared with the medical community through peer-reviewed publications and lectures to advance leukemia diagnostics worldwide.

The Research Department aims to gain deeper insights into the mechanisms of hematologic diseases and to approach known problems from new perspectives. Extensive research projects contribute to evidence-based patient care.

Shaping the Future of Diagnostics Together

By combining Research and Innovation, we at MLL not only optimize leukemia diagnostics, but also actively contribute to the advancement of the treatment of hemato-oncological diseases – also by sharing and developing our knowledge and findings with the medical community. Our ultimate goal is always the well-being of the patient.
